In the Quran

«...And know that Allah is Forgiving (Ghafur) and Forbearing (Halim).»

Surah Al-Baqarah, 235

Explanation

  1. Not rushing to punish

Although Allah is able to punish the sinner at once, in His forbearance He grants time. The Quran states: "If Allah were to punish people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature; but He defers them for a specified term" (Fatir, 45).

  2. The reprieve is a chance to repent

Allah's forbearance is not indifference; the reprieve given is a chance for repentance and reform. A person who reflects on this name both gives thanks for Allah's patience and tries not to waste that chance.
