About the Hijri calendar
The Hijri (lunar) calendar begins on July 16, 622 (Gregorian), the date when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) migrated from Mecca to Medina.
The calendar consists of 12 months, each lasting 29 or 30 days. The year spans 354 or 355 days, about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.
For this reason, Islamic holidays shift 10-11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year, and key dates such as Ramadan and Eid al-Adha pass through all seasons over the course of each year.
How does the converter work?
The conversion uses the Umm al-Qura method, the official astronomical calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is adopted by international religious organisations.
