Calculation method: Muslim World League (MWL), Shafi'i madhhab. Imsak is taken 10 minutes before Fajr, and iftar is taken at the same time as Maghrib. This choice is in line with the Azerbaijani tradition.

The five daily prayers

In Azerbaijan, the five daily prayers are performed every day: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. These five prayers are among the core acts of worship in Islam and follow the natural rhythm of the day.

Imsak is the boundary at which the fast begins, approximately 10 minutes before Fajr. Iftar, on the other hand, is the moment the fast is broken at sunset, at the time of the Maghrib prayer.

Each prayer time is calculated from the sun's position relative to the horizon: Fajr is the moment the dawn twilight appears, Dhuhr is when the sun passes the zenith, Asr is when the shadow reaches a certain proportion, Maghrib is the moment the sun sets, and Isha is the moment the twilight disappears completely.

How are prayer times calculated?

Times are calculated from the sun's altitude relative to the geographical position. For Fajr and Isha, different schools of jurisprudence and institutions take different zenith angles. We use MWL's standard parameters (Fajr −18°, Isha −17°).

The time of the Asr prayer is determined by the length of the shadow. According to the Shafi'i (and majority) school, Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own height.

Imsak is taken 10 minutes before Fajr so that those fasting can finish their suhoor comfortably. Iftar, on the other hand, coincides with the beginning of the Maghrib prayer.
