What is dream interpretation and how is it done?

In the Islamic tradition, dreams are not random images: they come from three distinct sources, originating from Allah, from Satan, or from our own soul. Distinguishing these three types is the first and most important step of interpretation.

Dream interpretation (tafsir al-ruya) is a science with a tradition of over a thousand years among Islamic scholars. The main sources are Ibn Sirin's Tafsir al-Ahlam and the works of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq and al-Nabulsi. In these books, the interpretation of every symbol is linked to the Quran, the hadith, and the etymology of the Arabic language.

According to the hadiths of our Prophet (peace be upon him), dreams are of three types: rahmani (glad tidings or warning from Allah), shaytani (fear and confusion), and nafsani (a reflection of daily thoughts). When seeing a bad dream, seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of Satan and spitting three times to the left is recommended in the hadith of Bukhari.

Three conditions are essential for a correct interpretation: the dreamer's intention and state of mind, the context of the dream (who, where, at what time), and the meaning of the symbol in the local culture. The same symbol can carry different meanings in the dreams of different people: therefore, scholars avoid generalizations.
