What is the Qibla?

The Qibla is the direction Muslims face when performing prayer. It points toward the Kaaba, in the centre of the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca.

In the second year of the Hijra, with verse 144 of Surah al-Baqarah, the qibla was changed from the Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem to the Kaaba in Mecca.

According to modern astronomical calculations, from the territory of Azerbaijan the azimuth of the Kaaba is approximately 205-210 degrees, that is, it points from north toward the south-west.

How is the Qibla angle calculated?

The Qibla angle is calculated using the great-circle method over the Earth's surface. The starting point is your location, and the destination is the coordinates of the Kaaba (21.4225° north, 39.8262° east).

If your phone has a compass, the device's magnetic sensor determines the north direction, and we adjust the Qibla angle accordingly.

Even without a compass, you can select your city. Based on the displayed degree and bearing, you can determine the direction with an ordinary compass or with the sun's shadow.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which direction is the Qibla from Baku?

The direction of the Kaaba from Baku is approximately 207°, that is, from north toward the southwest.
  • What should I do if my phone does not support a compass?

Select your city and determine the shown angle using an ordinary magnetic compass, the sun, or a compass app. If you know where north is, turn clockwise toward the Qibla angle.
  • Why do different apps show different numbers?

The difference is usually related to magnetic declination, which varies by location, or the calculation method. An error of ±1–3 degrees is the accepted tolerance.
  • How do I find the Qibla using the sun?

At zenith (Dhuhr), the sun points due south. If you turn approximately 20–25 degrees from south toward the west, you will find the Qibla direction.
  • What is magnetic declination?

It is the difference between the north indicated by a magnetic compass and geographic north. In Azerbaijan this difference is about +5° to the east and should be taken into account for accuracy.
  • Is the Qibla always southwest?

Only for Azerbaijan and neighbouring countries. For example, from the USA the Qibla is to the northeast, and from South Africa it is to the northeast.
