What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: by Allah's command, a Muslim who owns a certain amount of wealth gives a fixed portion of it to those in need once a year.
The main purpose of zakat is to purify wealth and strengthen social justice and solidarity in society.
For Azerbaijani Muslims, zakat is both an individual act of worship and a social responsibility: a hand extended to family, neighbours and fellow citizens in need.
How is zakat calculated?
1. Check whether your wealth reaches the nisab. The nisab is approximately 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The lower of these two values is taken as the basis for the benefit of the poor.
2. If your wealth has remained above the nisab threshold for one Hijri (lunar) year, zakat is obligatory.
3. Add up all wealth subject to zakat: gold, silver, cash, bank savings, business goods and receivables.
4. Subtract your debts and calculate 2.5% of the remaining amount: this is the zakat to be paid.
Who is zakat given to?
Verse 60 of Surah At-Tawbah states that zakat is given to eight groups: the poor, the needy, those who collect zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled to Islam, those to be freed from slavery, debtors, those striving in the path of Allah and travellers stranded on their journey.
In Azerbaijan you can give zakat directly to those in need, to family members (except parents and children), to neighbours and relatives, as well as to trusted charitable organisations.
Frequently asked questions
How much is zakat?
Zakat amounts to 2.5% of the total zakatable wealth, that is, 1 manat for every 40 manat and 25 manat for every 1,000 manat. What is the nisab amount?
It is approximately 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Of these two values, the one that is lower in manat is taken as the basis so that more people can pay zakat. On what wealth is zakat paid?
Zakat is paid on gold, silver, cash, bank savings, business goods, loans expected to be repaid (receivables) and livestock. A home, clothing and a car for personal use are not subject to zakat. How do I account for my debts?
Your debts to others are deducted from your total wealth. Only if the remaining amount reaches the nisab threshold is zakat obligatory. Is zakat always calculated with gold?
No, because it benefits more of the poor, the price of silver usually gives the lower nisab threshold. This way, more Muslims get the opportunity to pay zakat.Who can I give zakat to?
To the eight groups indicated in verse 60 of Surah At-Tawbah: chiefly the poor and the needy, close relatives (except parents and children), debtors and trusted charitable organisations. At what time of the year can zakat be given?
It can be given at any time of the Hijri year: the condition is that a lunar year has passed over the wealth. Many Muslims choose the month of Ramadan, because the reward is increased in this month.
