Times are calculated to match the official prayer calendar of the Caucasian Muslims Office (QMİ): Fajr at 16°, Isha at 15°, the Maghrib adhan when the sun is 3.5° below the horizon, and Asr when a shadow is twice the length of its object. Imsak is 5 minutes before the Fajr adhan. For Baku, Ganja and Nakhchivan the difference from the QMİ calendar is at most one minute. Times are shown in Baku time (UTC+4).
The five daily prayers
In Azerbaijan, the five daily prayers are performed every day: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. These five prayers are among the core acts of worship in Islam and follow the natural rhythm of the day.
Imsak is the point at which the fast begins, and the QMİ calendar places it 5 minutes before the Fajr adhan. Iftar is when the fast is broken: at sunset in Sunni jurisprudence, and when Maghrib time begins in Jafari jurisprudence.
Each prayer time is calculated from the sun's position relative to the horizon: Fajr is the moment the dawn twilight appears, Dhuhr is when the sun passes the zenith, Asr is when the shadow reaches a certain proportion, Maghrib is the moment the sun sets, and Isha is the moment the twilight disappears completely.
How are prayer times calculated?
Times are calculated from the sun's altitude at each location. Institutions use different angles for Fajr and Isha. QMİ does not publish its method, so we chose the parameters by comparing against its monthly calendars: the sun 16° below the horizon for Fajr and 15° for Isha.
As in the QMİ calendar, the Asr adhan is shown when an object's shadow reaches twice its height. The Maghrib adhan comes about 15 minutes after sunset, when the sun is 3.5° below the horizon. The moment of sunset is shown separately in the table.
As in the QMİ calendar, Imsak is 5 minutes before the Fajr adhan: a fasting person stops eating and drinking from that time.

Frequently asked questions
What are today's prayer times in Baku?
The table above shows today's Imsak, Fajr, sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, sunset, Maghrib and Isha times for Baku. To see another city, choose it from the menu. What is the difference between Imsak and Fajr?
Imsak is the moment the fast begins: 5 minutes before the Fajr adhan in the QMİ calendar. The Fajr adhan marks the start of the Fajr prayer time. The difference matters most to people fasting in Ramadan. When is iftar time?
The Quran commands completing the fast until the night (al-Baqarah 2:187). In Sunni jurisprudence the night begins at sunset and the fast is broken then (Bukhari 1954): that is the "Sunset" time in the table. In Jafari jurisprudence, as a precaution, one waits after sunset until the redness in the eastern sky has passed overhead (Ayatollah Sistani, Islamic Laws, ruling 722): this roughly matches the Maghrib adhan in the table. Is there a difference between Shia and Sunni prayer times?
Yes, mainly for Asr and Maghrib. The table follows the QMİ calendar: Asr when a shadow is twice its object's length, and the Maghrib adhan about 15 minutes after sunset. In the Shafi'i school Asr begins when a shadow equals its object's length, which is 36 to 75 minutes earlier depending on the season. Sunset is shown separately so that everyone can break the fast according to their own school. Are the times adjusted for daylight saving time?
No. Azerbaijan has not observed daylight saving time since 2016. All times are shown in Baku time (UTC+4) and do not depend on your device's time zone. Can I print the table?
Yes, press Ctrl/Cmd+P in your browser to print the table or save it as a PDF.How do I find times for villages and towns?
The list covers every city and district for which QMİ publishes a calendar (74). If your village or town is missing, choose the nearest district centre: within a few tens of kilometres, times usually differ by a minute or two.
