Story summary

Ayyub (peace be upon him) is known in Islam as the greatest symbol of patience. He faced severe trials such as the loss of his wealth, his health and his family, yet he never lost his patience and gratitude toward Allah. After many years he supplicated to his Lord, and Allah healed him and restored everything he had lost.

Full story

  1. The great trial

Ayyub (peace be upon him) possessed wealth, health and a large family, all blessings granted to him by Allah. But after a time he faced a severe trial: he lost his property, his children and his health.

Throughout this trial, which lasted for years, he did not rebel against Allah; instead he remained in patience and gratitude. His patience became an example for all believers.

  2. Supplication to his Lord

When the hardship grew long, Ayyub (peace be upon him) turned to his Lord in humility: "Adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful" (Al-Anbya, 83).

In this supplication he neither complained nor fell into despair; he simply acknowledged his own helplessness and sought refuge in Allah's mercy. This is a beautiful example of how a believer should pray in a time of hardship.

  3. Healing and the restoration of his blessings

Allah accepted his supplication and commanded him: "Strike the ground with your foot; here is a cool spring for washing and for drinking" (Sad, 42). In this way he was healed.

Allah restored to him his family and his blessings, multiplied (Sad, 43-44), and described him as a good, patient servant: "We found him patient. What an excellent servant! He was ever turning back to Allah" (Sad, 44).

  4. Gratitude in abundance as well

Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrates Ayyub's (peace be upon him) gratitude to Allah in this way: while Ayyub was bathing, golden locusts fell upon him, and he began gathering them into his garment. His Lord called out to him: "O Ayyub, have I not made you self-sufficient from what you see?" He replied: "Yes, my Lord, but I can never be free of need for Your blessing" (Sahih Bukhari).

This hadith shows that the beauty of Ayyub (peace be upon him) lay not only in his patience during hardship but also in his recognition of his need for and gratitude to Allah during times of abundance.

In the Quran

The story of Ayyub (peace be upon him) is narrated mainly in Surah Al-Anbya (chapter 21) and Surah Sad (chapter 38). The Quran does not describe his trial at length, but it emphasizes the humble supplication he made to his Lord and the healing Allah granted him. In the Quran he is praised as a patient servant who constantly turned to Allah.
