Full story
Migration and the call
Lut (peace be upon him) was a Prophet who believed in Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and migrated together with him. Allah sent him to a people.
He called his people to worship Allah alone and to piety, and conveyed honesty and truth to them.
The immorality of the people
The people of Lut (peace be upon him) were engaged in an indecency that no community had committed before: men having intimate relations with men. Lut warned them against this immorality, saying, "Do you commit such immorality as no one before you in the worlds has committed?" (Al-Araf, 80).
But his people rejected his counsel and threatened to expel him from among them.
The destruction of the people and Lut's deliverance
When his people persisted in denial and immorality, Allah's punishment came. Allah commanded Lut (peace be upon him) and the believers to leave that place by night; only his wife remained among those who stayed with the people.
The punishment fell upon the people and they were destroyed (Hud, 82). Lut and those who believed with him were saved by Allah's mercy. This account shows the fate of immorality and the denial of truth.
Lut's longing for strength
Facing his people's aggression, Lut (peace be upon him) said in helplessness, "If only I had power against you, or could take refuge in a strong support!" (Hud, 80). At that moment he did not yet know that the guests in his house were Allah's angels.
Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), referring to this statement, noted that Lut (peace be upon him) had in fact taken refuge in the strongest support, Allah, and asked Allah's mercy upon him (Sahih Bukhari). This reminds us that Prophets rely only on Allah even in moments of hardship.
In the Quran
The account of Lut (peace be upon him) is narrated in the Quran in Surah Hud (11) and Surah Al-Araf (7), as well as in Surah Ash-Shuara and Surah Al-Ankabut. The Quran describes his call, the immorality of his people, and their destruction in measured and admonitory language.
Lessons and wisdom
- Immorality spreading through a society is a danger that leads to destruction.
- Prophets defend the truth alone, even against the majority.
- It is faith, not kinship, that saves a person: the wife of Lut is an example of this.
- Allah protects His friends even from the greatest punishment.
