- Meaning
- Al-Badi means the one who created the heavens and the earth without any prior precedent, model, or material, incomparably and without likeness. Everything He creates is new and original in its kind. A human being only imitates and combines things that already exist; Allah, however, originates beings that are entirely new and without equal.
In the Quran
«"(He is) the Originator of the heavens and the earth without precedent (Badi). When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is."»
Surah Al-Baqarah, 117Explanation
Origination without precedent
The word Badi carries the meaning of originating something that has no prior likeness. The Quran states: "(He is) the Originator of the heavens and the earth without precedent" (Al-An'am, 101). The countless original forms and the order found throughout the universe are signs of this name.
The command "Be"
Allah has no need of a means, time, or effort in order to create. When He decrees a thing to be, He says to it "Be" (kun), and it comes into being at once (Al-Baqarah, 117). This is an expression of His power and His incomparability.
