Summary
The People of the Cave (Ashab al-Kahf) is the story of a group of young men who believed in the One God in the midst of an idolatrous society. To protect their faith they left their city and took refuge in a cave. Allah made them sleep there for many years and then woke them, so that people would know that the resurrection is true. The Quran does not give their exact number or location, because the point is not the number but the example of youths who gave up everything for the sake of their faith. This story is the source of the name of Surah Al-Kahf.
The story
Youths who believed in an idolatrous society
The Quran presents the People of the Cave as "a few young men" (fitya) who believed in their Lord (Al-Kahf, 13). They lived in a society where the people around them worshipped other than Allah.
After these youths saw the truth, they turned away from false belief. The Quran does not specify which city or which era they lived in; it directs attention not to the details of the event but to their faith.
Standing up for Tawhid
The youths stood up against the oppressive environment around them and openly declared Tawhid: "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call upon any god besides Him" (Al-Kahf, 14).
When they said these words, Allah strengthened their hearts. When they came under pressure because of their faith, they took counsel together and withdrew into a cave, asking Allah for mercy and right guidance (Al-Kahf, 10).
The long sleep in the cave
Allah put them to sleep in the cave for many years. The Quran states that they remained in the cave for three hundred years, adding nine more (Al-Kahf, 25).
This amounts to roughly 309 years; some scholars explain these nine years as the difference between the solar and lunar calendars. The Quran immediately closes the debate on this by saying "Allah knows best how long they remained" (Al-Kahf, 26). According to some narrations, a dog also accompanied them (Al-Kahf, 18); but neither the dog's nor the youths' exact number is confirmed in the Quran.
Their awakening and the lesson it holds
After their long sleep, Allah woke them. When one of them went into the city to buy food, the old coin he brought out revealed itself, and the people realized that many years had passed.
The Quran states that this happened so that people would know that Allah's promise is true and that the resurrection is real (Al-Kahf, 21). In this way, the faith of a handful of youths became a lesson in resurrection for an entire generation.

In the Quran
The story of the People of the Cave is narrated in Surah Al-Kahf (18), verses 9-26, and the surah takes its name from this event. According to some narrations, the surah was revealed in connection with one of the questions the idolaters posed to test the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Quran does not go into exact numbers, dates or geography in this story; instead it directs attention to the lesson by saying "do not dispute over this matter" (Al-Kahf, 22).
Lessons and wisdom
