Name meaning and origin
Zeynalabdin is formed from the combination of the Arabic word zeyn, meaning adornment or ornament, and abidin, the plural form of abid meaning worshippers, and means the adornment of those who worship. Because the name was formed by the joining of two words, close written forms such as Zeynülabidin and Zeynalabdin are also found in the sources.
The first bearer of this title was Ali ibn Husayn (c. 38-94 AH / 659-712), the son of Husayn, the grandson of our Prophet (peace be upon him); he was called by this name because he performed many prayers and prostrated often, was known for his knowledge and piety, and is considered the fourth Imam by Shias and the third by Ismailis. The person who truly made this name known in Azerbaijan was the famous oil industrialist and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev (1838-1924); thanks to him, the name continues to be used in the country today.
