Name meaning and origin
Zayd comes from the Arabic root ziyadə (to increase, to multiply) and means one who increases, one who multiplies. This ancient name, already widespread long before Islam, has been loved for centuries in Arabic and Azerbaijani circles because of its simplicity.
Zayd ibn Harisə was adopted by the Prophet (pbuh) and holds a special place as the only Companion mentioned by name in the 37th verse of Surah Al-Ahzab. He also has a trace in Azerbaijani classical literature: in Nizami Gəncəvi's poem Leyli and Məcnun, Zayd is portrayed as Məcnun's loyal friend and a witness to events.
