Name meaning and origin
Vasim comes from the Arabic root vasame (beauty, handsomeness) and denotes a person who is pleasant and good-looking in appearance. A name used since the Ottoman period, it appears, for instance, in the name of the 18th-century physician and author Hekim Abbas Vasim Efendi.
Although the name is not very common in Azerbaijan, it has a well-known bearer: Arabist scholar Vasim Mammadaliyev (1942-2019), dean of the Faculty of Theology at Baku State University and an academician, was among the co-authors of the translation of the Quran into Azerbaijani. Thanks to the clarity of its meaning and its well-known bearer, the name can still be chosen today.
