Name meaning and origin
Suhaib is a diminutive form derived from the Arabic root əshəb (reddish, gray-red color) and means having reddish hair and a ruddy complexion. His real name was Üməyrə, and the Byzantines who captured him when he was a child gave him the name Suhaib because of his appearance.
Suhaib ar-Rumi fell into Byzantine captivity at a young age and, after gaining freedom, returned to Mecca, became a wealthy merchant and, as one of the first to accept Islam, endured persecution. Because he left all his wealth behind in Mecca when he migrated to Medina, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said of him: 'Suhaib made a profitable trade.'
