Name meaning and origin
Siraj comes from the Arabic word siraj and means a lantern, a torch radiating light. The word appears twice in the Quran in different contexts: in Surah Nuh (71:16) the sun is described as a light-radiating lamp hung in the sky, while in Surah al-Ahzab (33:46) our Prophet (peace be upon him) is called a lamp (siraj) that calls to the right path and radiates light.
Owing to this second verse, the name Siraj is associated with the image of a person who sheds light on the right path and guides people. The name is still in use in Azerbaijan today; among its modern bearers is Siraj Abishov, a martyr and cameraman for Azerbaijan Television who died in a mine explosion in the Kalbajar region in 2021.
