Name meaning and origin
Shamkhal (in some sources Shavkal or Shauhal) was a title given from the end of the 12th century until 1867 to the rulers of the Kumyk, Lak and Dargin peoples in Dagestan, and carried the meaning of governor, viceroy. Historians disagree about the origin of the title: some connect it to the personal name of a governor named Shakhbal appointed by the Arabs to Kumukh, while others regard it as the rank of Turkic commanders who came to the region in the 12th century.
From the 17th century onward, the title became hereditary, passing only to the Kumukh dynasty, whose bearers resided in the settlements of Gazikumukh, Tarki, and Buynak. Over time, this title-name turned into an independent masculine name in the Caucasus and is still recorded in Azerbaijani personal-name dictionaries today as a simple boy name with historical weight.
