Name meaning and origin

Oyku derives from the verb oykun- (to imitate, to tell a tale) in the Turkic language, and this verb in turn traces back to the Old Turkic root ot- (to sing, to recount). Used little in the written language after the 17th century, the word was revived during the language reform of the 20th century and adopted in fiction as the equivalent of story.

Long used as a literary term, Oyku has grown popular as a personal name in Turkey over the last 20-30 years and from there reached Azerbaijan as a modern name. It carries positive associations with creativity, literature, and imagination, and although it has no connection to the Quran, since its meaning is positive there is no obstacle to its use.
