Name meaning and origin
Muhammad is a name derived from the Arabic root həmd (praise, gratitude), in an intensified verb form, and literally means praised many times, greatly lauded. It is a spelling of the same root as the true name of our Prophet (peace be upon him), Muhammad, one closer to the Arabic-Quranic pronunciation.
As the renowned theologian Elshad Miri has noted, the form Muhammad officially accepted in Azerbaijan is in fact a phonetic adaptation of the word Muhəmmad in the Quranic text, just as the Arabic original of the name Yusif is Yusuf. In this regard, Muhammad is not simply a different pronunciation of Muhammad, but an independent form directly referring to the Arabic-Quranic origin of the name, and it is increasingly chosen among religious families.
