Name meaning and origin
Muaz is formed from the Arabic root əuz (to seek refuge, to take shelter) and literally means one who is taken refuge in, one who is protected. The root is also used in the phrase a'udhu billah, and so the name carries the meaning of seeking refuge in God.
Muaz ibn Jabal was one of the few Companions who memorized the Quran during the Prophet's (PBUH) lifetime, and for his depth in knowledge and jurisprudence he was sent to Yemen as a judge and teacher. Dying young during the plague of Damascus, Muaz is regarded as one of the founders of the method of ijtihad in Islamic law.
