Khanzada comes from the combination of the Azerbaijani-origin word xan (ruler, chief) and the Persian-origin word zadə (descent, a lineage suffix), and literally means of the lineage of a khan. This structure follows the same model as other noble names, such as şahzadə.
Historically the name was used as a woman's personal name in the Ottoman dynasty: Khanzada (Hanzadə) Sultan, daughter of Sultan Ahmed I, bore this name, and in the 20th century another princess of Ottoman descent also took the same name. Today in Azerbaijan it is chosen as a rare girl name carrying a meaning of nobility; there is no religious obstacle to bearing it.
