Khabbab

Khabbab comes from the Arabic root xəbəb (quick striding, galloping a horse) and literally means one who moves swiftly and walks hurriedly. The root was historically used alongside meanings expressing both swiftness and endurance, so the name carries in its bearer a wish for both speed and fortitude.

The name's most famous bearer is Khabbab ibn al-Arat, counted among the first ten people to embrace Islam; in Mecca he worked as a blacksmith and suffered severe torture for his faith, yet he did not abandon his religion. Khabbab, who died in Kufa, was buried, by his own will, at the edge of the city, which later came to be considered the beginning of Kufa's cemetery. In Azerbaijan this name is today chosen mainly by religiously conscious families.
