Name meaning and origin
Juwayriyya derives from the diminutive form of the word jariya (young woman) in Arabic and means little girl, a young woman. The name was initially given by our Prophet (peace be upon him) to a woman whose real name was Barra.
The daughter of the chief of the Banu Mustaliq tribe, Juwayriyya bint Harith, after being taken captive appealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) for her freedom, and in return the Prophet married her; because of this marriage hundreds of captives from the tribe were freed. This historical event turned Juwayriyyah into one of the Mothers of the Believers and one of the beloved companion names.
