Isfandiyar is an ancient name of Persian origin; it traces back to the Middle Persian "Spandadāt" and the Avestan "Spəntō-dāta" forms, meaning "given by the holy one", "a gift of God". In modern Persian the name also carries the shade of "hero, brave warrior".
Isfandiyar is known in Ferdowsi's "Shahnameh" as the son of the Kayanian ruler Goshtasb and an invincible hero. In Azerbaijan the name is chosen in connection with the classical Persian literary tradition.
