Hatif

Hatif is derived from the Arabic root h-t-f (to call, to sound) and means an invisible herald whose voice is heard but who cannot be seen. In classical literature, the hatif is usually portrayed as a hidden voice that brings a person news in a dream or by inspiration, and it is also used to refer to the voice of conscience.

Widely used in Persian poetry as an independent name and pen name, its best-known example is the eighteenth-century Persian poet Sayyid Ahmad Hatif Isfahani, who wrote poems under the pen name Hatif. Though rarely encountered in Azerbaijan as an independent personal name, it is among the names whose meaning is clear and that are acceptable from a religious standpoint.
