Hashim

Hashim is a nickname derived from the verb hashama (to crumble, to break into little pieces) in Arabic and literally means one who crumbles and shares out bread. During a year of famine in Mecca this man, whose real name was Amr, brought bread from the Levant, soaked it in meat broth, and distributed it to the pilgrims, so he was given the nickname Hashim; with time it became the name of his lineage.

Hashim ibn Abd al-Manaf was the great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the founder of the Hashimite branch of the Quraysh; he established the tradition in which Meccan merchants sent trade caravans to Yemen and Abyssinia in winter and to the lands of Syria in summer. Although recorded in small numbers among modern masculine names in Azerbaijan, Hashim is a historical name of clear origin.
