Barira derives from the root birr (goodness, benevolence, loyalty to one's word) in Arabic and means a woman who is kind, does good, and stays true to her word. This root is also related to the word əbrar (righteous people).
In history, Barira, who bore this name, was a slave-girl whom Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) purchased and freed; after her emancipation, the ruling our Prophet (PBUH) gave regarding the right of walā became a famous example in Islamic law (Bukhari, 2536).
