Azay

Azay is a boy name of Arabic origin. Although experts consider this anthroponym to share the same root as the verb “azalmaq” (to diminish), our Azerbaijani ancestors evaluated the name within an entirely different framework of meaning. Words in our language beginning with the particle “az”, such as “azı”, “azıx”, and “azman”, carry the sense of “huge, great, large”; when choosing a name for their son, our ancestors preferred precisely this meaning of strength and greatness.

The name Azay is relatively rare in Azerbaijan but has a distinctive harmony of its own. Its short, memorable form makes it a choice among modern families as well. It expresses the wish that the child given this name will grow into a great, strong, and respected person.

It has not been confirmed that the name Azay appears in the Quran. Nevertheless, with its pure sound and deep meaning, the name is part of Azerbaijani name culture.
