- Meaning
- "Al-Mutakabbir" is the name that expresses that true greatness and majesty belong to Him alone. In a person, arrogance is a blameworthy trait, because a human being is in fact powerless; in Allah, however, greatness is rightful, because all majesty, power and perfection belong to Him.
In the Quran
«He is Allah, the Compeller (Al-Jabbar), the Possessor of true greatness and majesty (Al-Mutakabbir).»
Surah Al-Hashr, 23Explanation
True greatness belongs to Him alone
Greatness (kibriya) is an attribute befitting Allah; for a created being, arrogance is a fault. It is narrated in a hadith qudsi that Allah said, "Majesty is My cloak and greatness (kibriya) is My garment" (Sahih Muslim, 2620). That is, this attribute belongs to Him alone.
A lesson in humility
Reflecting on this name teaches a person humility: a claim to greatness befits only Allah, the Owner of all things, not a powerless servant. In this way, the name keeps a person away from misplaced pride.
