Arabic
الْكَرِيم
- Transliteration
- al-Karīm
- Meaning
- Al-Karim means abundantly generous, gracious, forgiving and noble. Allah's generosity is boundless: He gives before He is asked, gives great reward for a small deed, forgives the one who errs, and does not disgrace His servant. Karam conveys both the abundance of giving and not making a display of it while giving.
In the Quran
«O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous (Karim)?»
Surah Al-Infitar, 6Explanation
Boundless generosity
Allah's generosity is not tied to any return. He gives to the disbeliever and the believer alike; He does not send away empty-handed whoever asks. The Quran describes Him as "your Lord, the Generous" (Al-Infitar, 6) and "Lord of the Throne, the Generous" (Al-Muminun, 116).
The beauty of generosity
True generosity is giving without reminding of the favor, without exposing a fault. Allah covers His servant's sin and accepts even little obedience. A person who reflects on this name both places hope in Him and learns to be generous toward others.
